なゆた出版は、われながら、なかなかおもしろい仕組みを考えたものだと思っています。
通常、大手出版社から刊行される画集のほとんどには解説が付いており、画像を「１ページに１作品」というシンプルなレイアウトで掲載したものは、あまり多くありません。
また、商業出版ではある程度の売上規模が求められるため、一定以下の需要しか見込めない題材は、なかなか出版することができません。
ところが、なゆた出版はオンデマンド印刷を利用した個人出版です。そのため、比較的マイナーなシリーズであっても刊行することができます。
『六十余州名所図会』や『富嶽百景』、『小林清親の光線画』などは、まさにこの方式だからこそ出版できた作品集だと言えるでしょう。
こうした方法を採用した根本には、「アーカイブ」というものへの意識があります。
国会図書館や世界各地の美術館には、優れた浮世絵や新版画が数多く所蔵されています。しかし、それらが広く一般の人々にとって、気軽に楽しめる形になっているとは言えません。
有名な作品であれば、書籍に収録されていたり、展覧会で展示されたりすることもあります。しかし実際には、目にする機会がほとんどない作品も数多く存在します。
過去に書籍化されていても、すでに絶版となり、手軽に入手できなくなっているものも少なくありません。
そうした文化遺産を、紙の本として気軽に楽しめるようにしよう。
それが、なゆた出版というプロジェクトの核心です。
公的機関が多額の費用をかけて収集し、保存しているにもかかわらず、たまに開催される展示の際にしか鑑賞できないというのでは、やはりもったいないですからね。
なゆた出版の画集は、AmazonのKindleペーパーバックという仕組みを利用しています。そのため、すべての本がAmazonの工場で印刷・製本され、発送されています。
あくまで「ペーパーバック」ですので、紙や印刷の品質については、最高級の画集と同等とは言えないかもしれません。光沢紙が使用されている点について、不満を感じる方もいらっしゃいます。
ただ、この仕組みの制約のなかで、実現できる限りの品質には到達していると自負しています。
手前味噌ではありますが、画像の修復、作品の配置、余白の調整、判型、そして元となる素材の選定など、シンプルに見えるからこそ、細部にはかなり気を配っています。
また、このKindleペーパーバックという仕組みだからこそ、需要の限られた作品を出版することができ、ほとんどの場合、翌日配送という迅速な対応も可能になっています。
さらに、オンデマンド印刷であるため、基本的に絶版になることもありません。Amazonのサービスが続く限り、これらの作品集は新品として販売され続けます。
Amazonでよく見かけるような、「中古品しか残っておらず、定価の何十倍もの価格に高騰している」ということも起こりません。
もちろん、この仕組みには一長一短があります。
それでも、これまで紙の書籍として楽しむことのできなかった名作を、手軽に鑑賞できるようにするという点に、なゆた出版の画集の意義を感じていただければと思います。

I believe Nayuta Publishing has created a rather interesting publishing model.
Most art books released by major publishers include extensive commentary, while relatively few present one artwork per page in a simple, uncluttered layout. Commercial publishing also requires a certain level of sales, which means that subjects with only limited demand are often considered unviable.
Nayuta Publishing, however, is an independent publishing project that uses print-on-demand production. This makes it possible to publish even relatively specialized series. Collections such as Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces, One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji, and Kobayashi Kiyochika’s Light and Shadow Prints are examples of books that could be published precisely because of this approach.
At the root of this model is a strong awareness of the importance of archives.
The National Diet Library and museums around the world hold outstanding collections of ukiyo-e and shin-hanga, yet much of this material is not readily accessible for the general public to enjoy. Famous works may appear in books or exhibitions, but many others are rarely seen. Even when books have been published, they are often long out of print and difficult to obtain at a reasonable price.
The central aim of Nayuta Publishing is therefore to make this cultural heritage easily accessible in the form of printed books. Public institutions devote substantial resources to collecting and preserving these works, so it seems a shame that many of them can only be appreciated during occasional exhibitions.
Nayuta Publishing uses Amazon’s Kindle paperback system. All of our books are therefore printed, bound, and shipped through Amazon’s facilities.
Because they are paperbacks, the paper and printing quality may not be comparable to that of the most luxurious art books. Some readers may also be dissatisfied with the use of glossy paper. Even so, I believe we have achieved the highest possible quality within the limitations of this system.
Although the finished books may appear simple, a great deal of care goes into the details, including image restoration, placement, margin adjustment, trim size, and the selection of the source material itself.
At the same time, it is precisely this Kindle paperback system that allows us to publish lesser-known works and, in many cases, offer next-day delivery. Since the books are printed on demand, they also never need to go out of print. As long as Amazon continues to operate the service, these collections can remain available as new books.
This also means that they are unlikely to become unavailable except as secondhand copies selling for many times their original price, as sometimes happens with conventional art books on Amazon.
The system has both advantages and disadvantages. Nevertheless, I hope readers will recognize the value of making important works, many of which were previously unavailable in printed form, easy to enjoy in an affordable physical book.
